Baidu to sell video ads

Posted on August 27th, 2007 in Baidu, China Internet News by Patrick Abotsi

Baidu has started selling video advertisement through its network of 150,000 partner sites in China. The new service basically will promote floating, embedded or inserted video ads through those partners websites. The official name is Baidu TV and it will provide three additional services: video business card, business video hosting and search video (similar to Google Adwords’ video ads format).

At this point we do not know exactly how many of sites will be involved in this new scheme, the conditions these sites have to meet, or the profit-sharing terms.

Probably a move to remind Google China, who has been very active recently through acquisitions and new products launching, of who is the real “LaoDa” in the Chinese search market.

Posted on August 22nd, 2007 in China Internet News, Google by Patrick Abotsi

Google China has launched a new blog search portal for mainland China, just a few weeks after doing so for Hong Kong and Taiwan. The blogging search engine is still in beta mode, but already gives results from both international and Chinese major blogging platforms. Even blogs hosted by Google top competitor Baidu can be found.
Time will tell if the new site will have any positive impact on Google presence in China and on the Chinese blogosphere. Google Blog Search China can be accessed through this link .

Baidu has launched the beta version of its Voice Search service, which basically allow users to get help from Baidu’s customer service by dialing 11616690. The purpose is to operate on a Q&A model. This number can be called by users of the fixed-line operators China Telecom and China Netcom, as well as those of mobile carriers China Mobile and China Unicom. If you are dialing from outside the capital you need to add Beijing code before the number (010-11616690).

The voice search service is currently free, with lines opened from 9 AM to 9 PM. The service is currently available in Chinese only.

Alibaba launches Alimama, its own online ad network

Posted on August 13th, 2007 in China Internet News, Pay-Per-Click by Patrick Abotsi

Alibaba.com, the parent company of Yahoo China, and one of the leading IT companies in China, has announced the launch of its own online ad marketplace, alimama.com. The new network has the potential to cause a serious threat to Google Adsense (Adcenter and Yahoo Search Marketing are virtually not an option in China). Alibaba’s own B2B websites give it a deep pool of potential advertisers (i.e. the millions of small and medium sizes enterprises that use the international and local versions of the site), and the company’s leading position in China will help it push its new system to local publishers and website owners.

The main question remains: are Chinese online advertising market ready yet? On the other hand, other than its local origin, can alimama.com really compete with Google Adsense and be profitable? There are many cases of Chinese companies ousting or beating foreign counterparts due to their local comparative advantage (Alibaba’s Taobao vs Ebay, Google vs Baidu etc.), but online marketing is a relatively new field for Alibaba, and the company doesn’t have yet a leading and self-owned search engine to rely on, on the contrary to Google or Baidu.
Only time will tell and confirm the potential of the new ad marketplace. We will be following this new site through our blog.

Alipay not supporting Firefox after August 15th

Posted on August 7th, 2007 in China Internet News, Yahoo by Patrick Abotsi

Alipay, an online payment system owned by Yahoo-invested Alibaba.com, will cease Firefox support past August 15th. The impact would be minimal though, Firefox popularity among Chinese web users is no where near comparable to its position in Western markets, the local No2 browser being Maxthon, a locally grown IE clone.

China Blog Awards 2007: China SEO Blog finishes second in its category

Posted on August 6th, 2007 in Company News by Patrick Abotsi

The first edition of the China Blog Awards was organized by Chinalyst with the objective of voting the best English blogs in China. Hundreds of blogs have been competing the last few weeks for the top spot in one of the following categories: Best Business-Law China Blog, Best General China-Blog, Best China News Blog, Best Personal China Blog, Best Technology China Blog and Best Travel China Blog.

We are very honored to have been voted runner up in the Best Technology China Blog category (although we would have been even more happier to win it all :-) ). Thanks for all the readers who voted for us, which is very encouraging especially considering the fact that our blog has been set up only a month or so and has a very small number of posts so far. We will look forward to next year edition, and congratulations for Fili from Chinalyst for making these awards happen.

We will add the sites of the winners and runner up of the China Blog Awards 2007 as featured listings to our China Expat Directory, absolutely free of charge.
